The step mother was regarded by the children as unkind and too strict.

When she was about 16, Florence had typhoid fever and almost died. Her brother George was working on a farm about ten miles away and did not know Florence was sick. He dreamed that he say his cousin Norman Dyer, another member of the Bucklin colony group, riding to him and telling him to come home because Florence was dying. This dream occurred three times that night and woke George up each time.

Florence's husband Asa Perkins was the school teacher in the rural school which Florence attended. He arrived when she was 16 years old, which was her last year of school. They were married when she was 19. Florence and Asa had 11 children. One of her daughters wrote that Florence never went to church because she always was pregnant or nursing or taking care of small children, but Asa always took all the children to church unless there was a blizzard.

She died while hanging up clothes to dry in the shade of a big oak tree.
